Why did we renovate?

Shifts in society and in our community are changing the way you use your Library. Technology is now a major part of what we do, reading formats are changing rapidly, and people are looking to libraries for spaces to meet with others to create, connect, and explore. See a TED Talk on what to expect from 21st century libraries.

While we will always be the place for you to discover the latest bestseller or bring your kids to storytime, we know that you also look to us to help you download a book or configure your newest device. You want dynamic places to meet with friends to study for a test or work with business partners to create your strategic plan. Here at EPL, we added new spaces on the second floor to better accommodate your growing needs.

What We Added:

  • More Meeting Spaces: Additional small-group meeting rooms were added to meet the demand for more private spaces for you to come together for meetings, tutoring, studying, book discussions, and more.
  • Separate Teen Space: A separate enclosed area, outfitted with the latest technology, a maker space, and collaborative learning areas encourage teens to gather at the Library while keeping noise to a minimum for other patrons.
  • Media Lab: A media lab, one of the newest trends in libraries, allows you to create professional-quality audio and video productions to use for work, for school, or for personal enrichment.
  • Display Centers: Taking our most popular subjects and creating special display hubs—where you’ll see fewer spines and more covers—promotes an enhanced browsing experience.
  • More space to relax: Adding Comfortable seating in a quieter area lets you to read newspapers or browse magazines at your leisure. More seating along the window areas accommodates the increased need for quiet work areas.

What We Improved:

  • Books: Books are still our main business, and we continue to spend most of our materials budget on books while also housing a large physical inventory. We make every effort to deliver the most in-demand books to you in a timely manner. Since the switch to the new catalog, we’ve been honing our ordering and acquisitions model to make it more efficient for you to get what you want.
  • Movies, Music, Magazines, and Games: The next most sought-after items at EPL after books are DVDs, followed by music, magazines, and games. We continue to house large collections of these items.
  • Digital Collections: Our digital collections include eBooks, Freegal music, Zinio magazines, databases, and streaming movies. We remain dedicated to purchasing the best and newest products available in these emerging collection areas. You have told us that you are especially interested in more eBooks, which we continue to purchase as publishers make them available to libraries.
  • Service: You still get the same high level of personal service that you have always received from Elmhurst Public Library. As our residents grow even more reliant on mobile devices, we have been hiring and training tech-savvy staff to help you download eBooks, learn how to use the latest software, or manage new devices. We’re always here to help you find your next great read, or locate the music, movies, or games that enrich your life.
  • Programs: We continue to offer many great programs. Additional meeting spaces allow us to host more classes, programs, and clubs, making your Library experience even better.
