Middle School Students

The Kids Library has volunteer positions available for middle school students during Summer Reading and during the school year. If a position is open, a link to the application will appear in purple to the right (it will appear as grey when closed). Applications for all the 2019 summer volunteer positions are accepted starting April 1, 2019 until April 30, 2019.

Summer Reading Volunteers

  • SUMMER READING TABLE VOLUNTEERS: These volunteers work two hours per week at the Summer Reading Table, registering children to participate in the Summer Reading Program, and handing out prizes. (link appears orange when open/grey when closed)
  • PAGE PALS: Page Pals are paired with second and third graders, and together they read and play reading games, once a week for seven weeks.
  • SUMMER READING TABLE SUBSTITUTES: We will be looking for substitutes to fill in at the Summer Reading Table when other volunteers are unable to work their shifts.
  • PROGRAM ASSISTANTS: These volunteers interact with kindergarten and first grade children as they practice reading skills through games and reading activities.

General Assistant (Summer)

General Assistants help the librarians with chores such sorting out raffle tickets, cleaning books, stapling, and pulling books from the shelves for displays. General Assistants work one hour a week, for nine weeks. (link appears purple when open/grey when closed)

General Assistant (School Year)

General Assistants help the librarians with chores such as making name tags for storytimes, cleaning books, stapling, and pulling books from the shelves for displays. General Assistants work one hour a week, for seven weeks.

Teens & Adults

General Volunteer

Duties may range from general tidying up, helping out in the book sale room, folding and stapling handouts, and assisting in book repair. [teens and adults]

Library Beautification Volunteer

These volunteers assist in keeping the Library clean and beautiful.  Duties include cleaning, scrubbing, dusting, and general tidying up.  This is a year round position. [teens and adults]

Outreach Volunteer

Volunteers are needed to deliver materials to patrons who cannot get to the Library. You must be comfortable driving and enjoy working with people. You must also be able to work efficiently and productively with minimal supervision and follow detailed instructions with accuracy. No more than three hours per week, year round. Please fill out an application and return to the Outreach Specialist in person at the 2nd Floor Information Desk or mail to 125 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst, IL 60126. Playologist Volunteer

These volunteers assist in the Kids’ Library.  They help decorate the Library for special events, clean toys, help with LEGO club, coordinate activities for the Learning Garden. [adults only]

Special Events Volunteer

Occasionally the Library needs help for special events.  Sign up to help out without making a big commitment.  Our big programs include Comic Con, Iron Chef, and Summer Reading Kickoff Day. [teens and adults]

Technology Volunteer

Volunteers assist in technology classes, video gaming, movie making classes, and new up and coming technologies. [teens and adults]

Teen Advisor Application for Winter open until Nov. 26

Applications are now being accepted for the Elmhurst Public Library Teen Advisors Program. This three month commitment includes planning and helping with teen programs, and a monthly meeting with Teen Library Staff. Service hours, a letter of reference, and eligibility to be nominated for the City of Elmhurst Exemplary Youth Service Awards are some of the perks of being accepted into the program. Openings are limited. Application deadline for Winter: Monday, Nov. 26.

Winter term runs Dec. 1- Feb. 28.
Spring term is March 1-May 31
Summer term: June 1-Aug. 31
Autumn term: Sept. 1-Nov. 30
